“But so we won’t offend them…” (Matthew 17:27a)
The point of Christian freedom is not to flaunt it before others, but simply to be free of excessive obligation. Yet, in Christ there is still an obligation to love and care for others.
Paul knew this (see 1 Corinthians 8, 10:23-33). More importantly, Jesus knew this and lived it.
Your conscience may release you to do things from which others may feel restrained, but your calling isn’t to convince them to be like you.
Your calling is to be like Jesus.
So, let go of some things if you have to. Say no to some things if you have to. That doesn’t mean you’re being fake or hypocritical or giving up on your convictions.
It means you’re loving like Jesus.
