“And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matthew 21:22)
Prayer is at the same time both a simple and complicated affair. Simple, because Jesus urges us to go to God as our Father and assures us we will have what we ask and whatever we need. Complicated because there are many times when it doesn’t look like our prayers were answered with what we asked for at all.
Maybe the problem is asking for the wrong things, but maybe it’s simply that deep down in our core, we don’t actually believe God will say yes.
We know we don’t deserve the gift, so we hold back on the request. We know it hasn’t happened before, so we feel it probably won’t happen this time, either.
Maybe our greatest, most frequent prayer should simply be, “Father, please help me believe.”
