“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared, but the least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.” (Matthew 11:11)
Jesus offers high praise to John, and what did John do to earn it? He simply said “yes” to God’s call. He didn’t struggle or strive to make something of himself or prove his value, he simply responded to God.
Yet, after His accolades to John, Jesus says something shocking, that though John may be great in the sphere of this world, there is another realm in which even the lowliest are honored more highly than him: “the Kingdom of Heaven.”
This begs the question, then, if true greatness is found only through membership in the Kingdom, what must we do to get in?
Simple. Just do what John did. Say “yes” to God’s call.
The path that led John to greatness is the same path offered to us. It is not a path of achievement, but surrender, and as we simply respond to God, something amazing happens.
We grow in greatness, just like Jesus said.
